Tony Filipek: 2013 Year In Review

2013 is history.  As a 25 year old going on 26, I'm thankful for every day I get the opportunity to wake up with ambition and a chance at creating a legacy for future generations of runners.  I may not be the fastest or most popular, but I enjoy each life accomplishment as well as witnessing other's accomplishments.  The following is not a comprehensive view of my sporadic training, but just a couple highlights from the past 12 months:

USA Road Mile Champs (Grand Blue Mile) Des Moines, Iowa

9th Place Finish (4:08)

This was huge for me, lining up against the most competitive field of milers thusfar in my career.  I was able to get two autographs from Leo Manzano after the race, in which I gave as a senior gift to a couple of my runners at SVSU that I coach.

Hillsdale Last Chance Meet, Hillsdale, Michigan

1:49.31 800 PR for the Win

This was my only 800 outdoors but was a great one.  Two athletes that I coach had big PRs in that race as well running 1:50.5 and 1:51.  They were extremely excited, actually letting out some expletive remarks and chest bumps.  Needless to say it was a good day!

New Balance Speed River Inferno, Guelph, Ontario, Canada

3:44.31 1500 PR for 2nd Place

3:44.31 was the first time I had ran a USA Champs B Standard!  Although it did not qualify me for the championships, I was really happy to run fast.  That was my 2nd year of doing 1500s and I am going to work on running faster in my 3rd year of running that event.

I'm looking forward to an extremely fast 2014!  I would like to run PRs in the 800/1500/Mile/5,000, while following training structure instead of training sporadically.  I would also like to start working on a Master's Degree in Exercise Science.  Opportunities will come to those who are grateful and truly do what they love to do.  I'll continue my journey through my peak years of running and hope to be a role model to current/future runners!
