Tony Filipek- Summer Base Training

Fall is approaching and summer is coming to a close.  This summer I took a leap of faith in many ways.  I chose to pursue a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, while giving up my coaching position at Saginaw Valley State University from my past 4 years.

This decision has lead me to my current status of Grad Student at Wayne State University in Detroit, Retail Sales at Hanson's Running Shop, and resident of Rochester, Michigan.  The running community in the Metro Detroit area is very contagious.  This has motivated me to up my aerobic running profile and get into great shape throughout the past 3 months.  Before this summer I had only ran 70 miles in a week one time in my life.  Most of my training was done at 35-45 miles a week during and after college.  My average weekly average the past 12 weeks is at 76 miles per week with a weekly high of 90 miles!  I have also started doing some longer workout reps as well which are helping bring my thresholds down.

I have some lofty goals in the half marathon and other varying distances as my body adjusts to a much higher volume.  I think this base I have build will help me throughout the fall and any indoor races I decide to take on.  I look forward to using my 1:49 800 meter background to blow up the roads and some distance races on the track.  I've never done a 5,000m on the track and think I can run a respectable time under 14:00 in that while also running under 5:00 Pace in the half marathon within the next year.

Anyways that is an update in my life as I'm always trying to stay positive and run some miles like my fast girlfriend Dani Miller!
